Dr. Krzysztof Reiss,Ph.D., is a Professor in theDepartment Interdisciplinary Oncology, and Director of the Neurological CancerResearch Program at the LSUHSC-NO Cancer Center.

Research: Dr. Reiss is leadingproductive and internationally recognized research in areas of cell signaling,energy metabolism, DNA repair, and viral oncogenes. A significant contributionfrom his group are the findings that spontaneous mutations found in somecancers are caused by the human polyomavirus JC (JCV) oncoprotein, largeT-antigen, which translocates insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS-1) to thenucleus, where IRS-1 interferes with DNA repair fidelity contributing toJCV-induced malignant transformation. In addition, Dr. Reiss is working ontechnologically advanced models of brain tumor progression for evaluatingdifferent anti-cancer regiments in a preclinical setting. His research has beenfunded during the last 20 years with multiple R01, P01, and P20 awards, as wellas with grants from the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation and NASA. He haspublished 170 peer-reviewed research articles and book chapters focused onviral oncology, IGF-1 receptor signaling, DNA repair, and tumor cell energymetabolism. In addition, he is a member of national and internationalscientific groups, and participated as reviewer for numerous NIH study sectionsand other granting institutions.

Scientific leadershipexperience: In this capacity, Dr. Reiss is successfully leading Phase 1 COBRE“Center for Translational Viral Oncology (CTVO). During 5 years of the funding,CTVO scientists published 80 research articles and submitted 41 research grantapplications among which 11 were funded including three R01 grants and one majorDOD research grant. In addition, Dr. Reiss has continuous collaborations withthe Louisiana INBRE, directed by Dr. Gus Kousoulas (LSUHSC, Baton Rouge); andwith the director of NIH COBRE “Center for Applied Immunology and PathologicalProcesses” Dr. Andrew Yurochko from LSUHSC, Shreveport. These essentialcollaborations have contributed to the improved consolidation of theseprograms, allowing junior investigators from these three institutions todevelop new collaborations, and to improve use of the existing researchinfrastructure. Dr. Reiss has also served as a chairmen and member of multipleDepartmental Promotion Committees, has served as a mentor for ten PhD students,has participated as advisor and/or mentor in the Master and Medical Research Programsat Temple University, Philadelphia (2000 – 2010), and at LSUHSC-NO(2011-present).
