The Crescent City OLQ Charitable Organization, the non-profit foundation of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. – Omicron Lambda Omega Chapter, threw strikes against cancer at its October fundraising event to support cancer research in Louisiana.  The “On the Heels of Hope: Strike Out Cancer Bowling Fundraiser” held Oct. 19 at Fulton Alley benefitted the Louisiana Cancer Research Center.

LCRC Chief Financial Officer Deborah Reeder was on hand to accept the generous donation presented by Marjorie Parker, President of the Omicron Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha,  and Linda Sevalia, Chairperson of Crescent City OLQ. LCRC Community Engagement Program Manager Raenique Sylve shared information about LCRC programs and distributed cancer education and awareness materials to participants.

“We do not take cancer lightly. We have lost members to cancer, and we've had members whose spouses have struggled with cancer,” explained Linda Sevalia.  “The Alpha Lambda chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha has a cancer initiative that supports both members and nonmembers – men and women – who have been touched by the disease. This fundraiser is our way of honoring them and contributing to vital cancer-fighting resources like the Louisiana Cancer Research Center.”

“This marks the fourth consecutive year that the Crescent City OLQ Charitable Organization together with the Omicron Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has chosen the Louisiana Cancer Research Center as their charitable beneficiary,” said Deborah Reeder. “The funds provided are critical to the fight against cancer-now more than ever. We are deeply grateful for this continued support, which reflects a shared commitment to advancing cancer research and improving lives.”

Approximately 30,000 Louisianans will receive a cancer diagnosis this year. The Louisiana Cancer Research Center serves as a collaborative hub that advances cancer research, improves prevention, and accelerates innovative treatments. LCRC brings together the collective talent of more than 350 researchers from across the state and member institutions – LSU Health New Orleans, Tulane University School of Medicine, Xavier University of Louisiana, and Ochsner Health – to improve cancer outcomes for Louisianans and all those impacted by the disease.
